How to save a TikTok as MP4 for playback or editing

Turn a supported public TikTok link into an available MP4 and understand file compatibility, source quality and why renaming a file is not conversion.

Choose MP4 when you need the whole clip

A saved MP4 is useful for offline playback, reviewing footage or importing a permitted reference into an editor. Unlike an MP3, it keeps the picture. Unlike a photo gallery, it has a timeline.

MP4 is a container, which means it holds media streams. The codecs inside it still matter to a player or editor. A familiar file extension is useful, but it does not promise that every device can play every possible MP4.

Save the available video from its link

Open the public TikTok post and copy its share link. Paste it into TikTok to MP4, submit it and choose an available video result. Save the file before the temporary result expires.

Keep the first downloaded copy unchanged until you have checked it. Renaming an image, web page or failed download to end in .mp4 does not convert it into a working video.

  1. Copy one public video link you are permitted to save.
  2. Submit it on TikTok to MP4.
  3. Choose an available standard or HD video result.
  4. Play the completed MP4, then import it into your editor if needed.

If the editor rejects a file that your player can open

First check that the download completed and that the duration is sensible. Then check the editor’s supported codecs and import requirements. A file that works in one player can still need a compatible conversion for a particular editing project.

Preserve the downloaded source before converting. Repeated exports can change quality and make it harder to identify where a problem started. For important work you created yourself, use the original export rather than a copy retrieved from a social post.

MP4 and HD answer different questions

MP4 describes the container; HD describes a source choice. A standard video can be an MP4, and a separate HD file can also be an MP4. Visit the HD downloader if detail is your concern.

If you only need the soundtrack, choose the MP3 downloader. For a carousel, use the photo tool. If the MP4 transfer finishes but you cannot find it, check the browser’s download list before requesting another copy.

What we checked

These checks use generated local media and the same file-processing code as TTDWN. The upstream extractor is replaced with a local fixture; this is not a test of live TikTok availability or a physical phone.

The source MP4 and saved MP4 have identical SHA-256 hashes in this check. Saving this available MP4 preserved its bytes, dimensions and frame rate. This does not prove that a TikTok source matches the creator’s original upload or contains an HD version.

The local checks also cover missing or duplicate HD sources, video-audio selection, image order and invalid media files. The test log identifies which behavior uses fixtures and which runs FFmpeg.

Reproduce the check from the repository with: npm run evidence:ttdwn
