Can a TikTok downloader save private, deleted or expired posts?
What a public-link downloader can access, why a thumbnail is not a backup and where to look for your own missing videos or Stories.
Being able to watch while logged in is not public access
Your TikTok account may have permission to view a post that a public-link service cannot retrieve. Copying the URL does not transfer that permission. TTDWN does not accept your login session to reach private content.
If you own the video, use the original export or the account’s own saving options. Do not make personal material public just to force it through a downloader. If another person owns it, ask them for a copy they are comfortable sharing.
A thumbnail or old link is not the video file
A message, bookmark or search result can outlive the media it points to. Seeing a title or thumbnail does not establish that the full video is still available. A downloader cannot rebuild a missing recording from that preview.
For your own missing work, check the device used to create it, Recently Deleted in your photo library, cloud backups and exported editing projects. Keep copies of anything you recover in storage you control.
Stories and LIVE replays need different checks
A Story is time-limited, so an old link may no longer resolve. The Story tool checks active public video Stories; it is not an archive. Photo Stories are not the same workflow as supported video Stories.
A stream ending does not automatically produce a public replay URL. The LIVE replay tool requires an available completed replay, and it cannot open a creator’s private replay dashboard. See the replay guide before submitting a profile link.
Use account exports for what they actually contain
TikTok’s data-request feature can help you inspect account records, but do not assume that requesting data restores every deleted media file. Read what your export contains and check any links while the sources remain available.
For future work, save your original export before posting. If you collect references, keep the permitted file together with its source URL. The Favorites backup guide describes a small, organized workflow without promising whole-account recovery.
About this guide
TTDWN maintains this guide. Its update date records a change to this page, not a new test on every device or every TikTok post.
How we maintain guides and report checksSources and further reading
Documentation supports the platform and file-format explanations. Community discussions describe individual experiences and are not proof that a tool works for every post.
