How to download an active public TikTok video Story

Use a specific active Story link, check the available video and audio options, and understand why an expired Story cannot be recovered.

Check that the Story is still active

TikTok describes Stories as photos and videos shared for 24 hours. That short window matters: a link copied yesterday may no longer point to accessible media. Open the specific Story before submitting it.

TTDWN’s Story workflow supports active public video Stories. A photo Story is not a regular photo carousel, and a link to the creator’s profile does not select the Story you want.

Save while the source is available

Copy the Story’s link from TikTok if sharing is available. Open the Story downloader, paste the address and submit it once. Check the returned options before choosing a file.

Depending on the source, the result may offer Video, HD Video or Audio. Save the format you need promptly. A successful link check is not a permanent backup, and temporary file links should not be kept as bookmarks.

  1. Open the active public video Story you are permitted to save.
  2. Copy its own share link and paste it into the Story downloader.
  3. Select an available output and complete the download.
  4. Play the saved file before the Story disappears.

What an unavailable result means

The Story may have expired, been deleted or become inaccessible. The tool cannot extend its lifetime or retrieve a private archive. If the Story still opens publicly, copy a fresh link and read the returned error before retrying.

Do not supply your TikTok password or cookies to make the request work. For your own Story, the original video on your device is a better backup than relying on a time-limited public source.

Use another tool when it is a different kind of post

For a regular published clip, use the video downloader. For a public photo carousel, use the photo downloader. A completed LIVE broadcast is a separate replay workflow, covered in the LIVE replay guide.

If you are trying to recover an old Story rather than save an active one, see private, deleted and expired posts for the limits and places to check your own backups.

Documentation supports the platform and file-format explanations. Community discussions describe individual experiences and are not proof that a tool works for every post.
